PHIXER for DJs: club PA mono fold, USB sticks, and phone checks before the gig
Club systems, booth monitors, and festival PAs often sum or thin stereo. USB stick exports and phone previews can hollow kick and bass that sounded huge in headphones. That is usually stereo FX, wide mid-side beds, or dual-path masters fighting on fold. Free phase-repair helps after polarity and path cleanup. It is not a widener, and it does not replace a mono-check habit on the stick and on a phone.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a club limiter, not a USB encoder, and not a substitute for mono-safe kick and bass. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights on stereo beds you must keep stereo (FX returns, printed stereo stems, wide music beds).
Why DJ mixes fail on club PA and phone fold
- Club / PA mono fold. Many rooms sum L/R hard, or the FOH path is effectively mono-leaning. Wide stereo FX and mid-side tricks hollow kick and bass. Related checklist: Club / DJ / PA mono fold.
- USB sticks and CDJs / controllers. Exports for USB playback can differ from your DAW monitor path. Wrong sample rate, stereo FX baked wide, or a master that never folded. Audition the stick file, not only the project.
- Phone check. Previews on phone speakers and single earbuds fold aggressively. What sounded huge in cans cancels on the commute. Same family as bedroom producers / phone fold and streamers / viewer fold.
- Booth vs floor. Booth monitors lie. Floor PA and phone clips tell the truth for the dancefloor and the Instagram story.
- Stereo FX under kick / bass. Huge in headphones, gone on fold. Center or simplify critical low-mid energy before spectral tools.
Fast DJ mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Solo the master / USB export (not only headphones). Flip a utility to mono, or play the stick file on a phone speaker.
- A/B kick + bass with stereo FX muted vs open. Note what disappears: chest, sub body, vocal mid.
- On dual-path masters (parallel bus, printed stereo stem + mono kick): mute one path briefly. Note which path thins the fold.
- Confirm on a real phone speaker or single earbud, then again on a mono-summed PA / utility if you have access. Correlation meters help; phones and clubs tell the truth.
Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)
1. Mono-safe kick and bass
Keep critical low end correlated. Do not leave identical kick copies a few ms apart. Mute duplicates. Stacked identical low end is the fastest hollow on fold.
2. Polarity if a path flips
Interfaces, USB rips, and some DSP invert. Flip Ø when body returns immediately. Guide: when not to use PHIXER (polarity first).
3. USB stick export check
Export the exact file you will load (WAV/AIFF as your deck expects). Play it from the stick or a USB-sim folder. Fix sample rate / bit depth / stereo FX bake before you chase plugins on the master.
4. Prefer mono-safe delivery for clubs and phone clips
Club PA, festival fills, and phone stories fold aggressively. Keep critical kick / bass / vocal mid correlated. Put width in sides that survive fold, not in fighting low-mid beds. Related: Club / DJ / PA mono fold.
5. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If a printed stereo FX return or music bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo.
DJ path types
| Setup | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Club / festival PA | Fine in booth, thin on floor | Mono utility; mono-safe kick/bass |
| USB stick / CDJ / controller | Project OK, stick file hollow | Audition stick export; polarity / sample rate |
| Phone preview / story clip | Huge in cans, gone on phone | Phone speaker check before export |
| Stereo FX under kick | Width kills body on fold | Mute FX; center critical low-mid |
| Parallel bus / printed stereo stem | Body cancels when both open | One hero path; polarity / align |
| Livestream DJ set | Booth OK, stream VOD hollow | Program mono-check; see streamers page |
When free PHIXER belongs in a DJ toolkit
- The material is already stereo and must stay stereo (FX return, printed stereo stem, music bed), not a mono kick you fake-widened.
- Kick/bass paths, polarity, and USB export are cleaned up, but fold still hollows a band of the spectrum.
- You can A/B mono with the plugin bypassed and hear clearer body without wrecking the image.
- You are building a mono-check habit on the stick and on a phone, not using PHIXER to paper over three open low-end paths.
- Budget is zero: free download on Gumroad (Win/Mac/Linux · VST3/CLAP/AU).
Decision table
| You notice… | First try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Kick thins when stereo FX opens | Mute FX; polarity | Wide FX under correlated low end |
| Project OK, USB stick hollow | Audition stick file; fix export | Different path than headphones |
| Fine in booth, thin on phone / floor | Mono utility; phone speaker check | Booth ≠ PA / phone fold |
| Stereo bed still cancels by band | PHIXER on that stereo bed | Residual spectral L/R fight |
| Kick alone is dull | Gain / EQ / sample choice | Not an L/R repair job |
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not mono-auditioned the USB export or a phone speaker yet.
- The fix is obviously one hero kick path, polarity, or quieter stereo FX under bass.
- You want PHIXER to make the mix louder, wider, or to replace a club limiter. Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is level or tone.
- Full list: when not to use PHIXER.
Quick path: Solo master / USB export in mono → one hero kick/bass path → polarity if a path flips → fix USB export → mute fighting stereo FX → phone speaker check → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation → confirm again on a phone or mono PA utility.
